Ever Searching [Past]

The creature seemed to move into a more appropriate position for such a deep discussion, dispute Cassie's protests, before continuing with another question.

"My memories I suppose. My experiences. And my body." He answered, feeling like he knew the answer quite confidently. He had never believed there was life after death. He had certainly never seen any evidence. This man seemed to contradict his belief, if what he was saying was true. "Is that true of you?" He asked. "Except for your body, I suppose. Your memories make you who you are?"

The eye looked at Castor in silence, leaving only the sounds of the ocean waves and.. well, Cassie's endless one-sided banter with the ocean and the little castle guards. Apparently they just needed to defend castle papa until it flew away, then all would be well...

"Memories." The eye's hoarse voice was much softer than before, and Yack glanced briefly towards Cassie, continuing after her attention is fully taken up by another wave. "Action" the eye concludes "Is what we are. Memories are tools. Flames. Shackles. Wings." The golem almost seems to grin as Yack's voice rises to its former fullness. "I remember. Some do not, but remain themselves. Some falter with both."

Castor repeated the words in his mind over again. He had a knack for remembering wording and it helped him to go over the thoughts the eye was expressing. From what he could tell, Yack disagreed with Castor. Memories did not make a person who they were.

Castor's inquiry into this being's identity seemed to be shifting into a deep philosophical discussion. He had never met a person to claim to have lived before and he suspected that the opinion he was expressing was based on that belief. Nothing more than his curiosity lead him to prompt further.

"Some have forgotten lives lived and yet remain themselves through their action? And yet others remain themselves with neither memory or actions of past lives?" He assumed the statement, 'Some falter with both' was referring to memory and action. He was basically repeating the statements in his own words to make certain he was understanding correctly. "It seems like a contradiction, at least partially." He tacked on.

"Cannot lose actions. If done, it was done. Body can be lost." The golem stands up, the castle finally falling to pieces. "Memories can be lost" The golem motions out to the sea.

"It behaves as it is. If it became oil we would still call it 'sea'. If it fell from the sky, it would be rain." The voice was a bit louder now, almost sermon-like in its tone. "When do you feel someone is not who they used to be? When they forget? When they look different? Or when they no longer act the same?"

Cassie finally looks back from her wave defending to see that castle papa has begun its flight! She thanks the valiant wall defenders for their sacrifice, asking them one last favor - hold the post while runs to get a shiny shell in the distance. The walls do not survive this final service.

He nodded, thinking he understood what Mr. Yack was saying. It made sense and was his argument was surprisingly logical. The problem Castor still had; the part that Yack's entire argument hinged upon, was the idea that something survived after the physical body died.

Castor was not concerned at this time with changing his view on the matter. He did, however, want to understand who he was talking to. If he couldn't understand completely because he didn't believe it, then he could at least understand how this person viewed himself. After all this, he realized he still kne little.

"I think... I understand." The creature seemed willing to answer his questions so maybe he would try another. "If you don't mind my asking, who have you been in your past lives?" He then gave a chuckle, realizing he wasn't speaking in line with what had just been established. "Or, rather, what other forms have you taken? What actions made you who you are?"

The golem came to a sudden halt. The eye was silent, but the golem's upward gaze suggested it was thinking about something.

Cassie's cheerful voice broke the silence, gleefully running up with the shiny shell in tow. "Papa, Look at this!"

The golem finally turns back towards Castor.

"I have and will always act as they willed. I am I, forever."

Yack turns back towards town, motioning for Cassie to show him the shell as he continues walking away. Cassie starts to do just that, then remembers something important! She waves back towards Castor.

"Remember to play really loud so your lost person finds you!" She makes a little mock-flute-playing motion with her hands (almost dropping the shell in the process) "If you want to play some more we'll be at the place with the pig on it until..um..um.." "next week." adds the eye.

He nodded, smiling warmly at the bond they shared. Cassie was a special girl, he could tell that much almost immediately. He wasn't sure why he thought that and he regretted switching his attention to Yack so quickly now that they were leaving. He was glad she had someone to watch over her, however strange he might be.

As they walked away, Castor turned back to the ocean, a deep sense of longing, though briefly dulled by new acquaintances and mysteries, returning and aching in his heart.
