Dinner Party

The girl smiled. "He'd like that! What's an aqua.. aquantan.. that word? Beach man didn't say he was one.. I think? He talked to papa a lot while I was protecting a sandcastle. It was fun, I didn't let the ocean win until we had to go!" Cassie had forgotten about the dinner battle at this point, the child giving Dorothy her full attention.

Havarti momentarily looked quite like a deer in headlights, and if you looked close enough you may have caught the beginnings of deer ears... just for a moment. He then snapped out of it, shook his head and quickly felt the sides of his head ears. Thank gosh... no deer ears. He felt slightly embarrassed that he still had that childish quirk when caught completely off guard. He chuckled a bit and smiled brightly, "That was a wonderful surprise Madam Dorothy.. I mean Lady Claiborne... Which would you prefer us call you this evening?" He turns to Cassie after she is done talking, "Do you mean acquaintance Miss Cassie?"

"Whichever makes you more comfortable." she said with a shrug.

"Cassie, an acquaintance is someone you are familiar with but not necessarily on familiar terms with. Floren dear, you're spilling." she added.

"Sorry, ma'am." he said with a splutter, trying to compose himself.

Dinner Party

Cassie opened her mouth to ask another question, let it hang for a moment, and then closed it in lieu of pondering it out herself. Someone you're familiar with, but not on familiar terms with...?

THE BATTLE!!!

As they waited, Yack took the initiative to lean a little towards Jones. The eye's hoarse, faintly echoing voice whispered "The victor's prize. You know it?"

Havarti smiles at Cassie's confusion, finding it adorable. He already viewed her like a little sibling, he could not help it. He had to try and help her... maybe if he made the example a bit more blunt.. maybe not exact, but close enough for Cassie to understand, "An acquaintance is like someone you know, but do not quite know well enough to be called a friend. Like.... you may know the baker that you buy bread from but you you do not know them well enough to be called friends. Does that make sense?"

Fen really didn't want to end up like the last kid to get picked in a primary school sports game. He looked meaningfully at the girl with bandaged hands. He figured that if a woman showed up here she was either very confident or very desperate. He could use either motivation but here's a vote for confidence. He moved over and stood next to the girl giving her a crooked smile. "Name's Fen. It's a party, shall we dance?"

"Yes. The victor gets to live another day. To the victor go the spoils. VICTORY IS ITS OWN REWARD. Today, I plan to give these socialites a taste of defeat like they haven't seen in centuries. I think you understand the importance of victory. It seems clear to me that you've made some changes to yourself to ensure victory, and I can respect that, even if I don't agree with it, and if we meet under different circumstances I may have to kill you to keep the world safe from your kind."

Dinner

Ms Claiborne turned away from the further explanations of the word acquaintance to quiz their colour blind friend.

"Now, I know Floren is after an arranged marriage. Prisma, I believe I asked you what you would ask of me? she asked not unkindly.

Prisma had almost as much a deer-in-headlights look as Havarti had earlier. Buttons was practically hiding behind a plate at this point.

Dancing

The younger woman held her hand up to get the valet's attention.

"Did you, I dunno, swing by an asylum or somethin' to pad out your numbers, boss?" she asked.

"Everyone here turned up of their own will, perhaps except Mr Yack there. Now, since it looks like you have your pairs, I'll explain how this little demonstration will work." he said, arranging two cups of mead, two cups of water and two empty cups.

"We will begin with 2 on 2 fight until submission, each person speaks only for themselves and may submit at any time. Once one of the four has been removed-" the valet took away one of the cups of water, then picked up another and tipped it out in a nearby plant, placing the now empty cup with the other empties "The remaining 3 will form a group to fight the last pair." he spoke slowly, gesturing at the cups repeatedly. This man was obviously used to teaching children.

Fen scratched at the stubble forming on his jaw thoughtfully before absently scooping up one of the mugs with alcohol in it and taking a drink. "How exactly are these groups being decided?" He wasn't sure if he should be hoping to be in the initial group that would have an advantage against the final pair or the final pair who would be completely fresh. Either way it was a nasty setup... Fen briefly wondered if it was the valet who thought it up.

"Feel free to decide amongst yourselves, otherwise randomly will do. The purpose is to show off for the Lady of the house, not necessarily to achieve total victory." the valet shrugged as he spoke.

"Only bad thing to be is the first one to submit." added the girl next to Fen.
