The Barons' Game
#31
Bruce inhaled sharply, clearly unsure if he should laugh or pretend to be aghast at the very notion.  He settled for something in-between. "That is not the Cyprien way, and Arielle is truly a proper bearer of that name. Moreover, Hadrian has not yet renounced his heritage, and so any early demise on his part would be no small matter.  N-not to say that anyone's death is a small matter!" The man quickly glances about with a concerned look on his face "b-but I must admit that there are certain lords who would find themselves.. more eager to find those responsible. Especially Lord Desmarais himself, who.. if you would pardon my audacity... is simply unwilling to cast away Monsieur Hadrian out of fatherly love. The lord himself is not an evil man."

Agnes nodded, drawing her blade and resting the point into the ground.

"I can't speak for anyone else, but your Arielle will have the help of the Order of Crows." she said, lowering her head towards the blade. As she bowed, Bruce and anyone else stood near heard faintly the cawing of birds, as if in a coordinated chorus.

Bruce was at a loss for words. "I.. thank you."

"Well, that is quite the predicament. But sure. I'll lend my aid." He turned them and spoke to Nathaniel, a little quieter so others could speak over them. "Well, I was going to make this pitch later, but I feel like this situation calls for it. If you offer your aid in my work upon my canvas, I will be far more help in aiding your friend. He hoped he agreed, and he hoped that he had read the physical traits of this man well enough.

"Sure, I'll lend a hand, since my teacher is a friend of your lord. But is it just me, or does this bet of their's seem a little one sided? Banishment, disownment, and self-harm are pretty intense. And the Lady has to marry him? That sucks, but it doesn't seem quite equal. How bad is this guy for that to seem like an even wager?"

"Thank you as well!" Bruce was starting to look outright cheerful, his smile matching his relieved laugh. "Actually, that was after he talked her down. The mademoiselle's first offer was for him to jump off a cliff head-first. While on fire."

The man's look turned a bit more serious again. "Marriage is not so small a thing, but more importantly it was not the mademoiselle's desire for there to have been a bet in the first place. Monsieur Hadrian was most persistent. She thought him desperate, a man whose countless schemes to acquire her had been foiled one time too many for his sordid mind to bear. Surely, this would be the chance to put an end to it forever. Who would have thought he'd been planning for this all along?"

"Hmm, your right. The more I hear of this guy, the worse he sounds. I'll be more than happy to help then. I only worry that he won't take his loss well, to put it lightly." Nathan said, worried about the Madam's safety.

"Ah. This actually seems like just the thing I'm good for. Preposterously prosperous people using the poor public as pawns in pointless plots? I'm all in."

Agnes sheathed her sword as the other promises of help started to come in.

"This lordling of yours sounds like a snake. How do we go about this ridiculous game of theirs?" she asked.

"Ah! Although there are numerous corner cases that have come up over the years, the general game is simple enough. Tomorrow morning you'll go to a large area, about a mile long, set aside for such activities. There will be a flag stand on both sides in a cleared area.

You'll have a forty-eight hours to set up whatever defenses you like on your half of the territory, only restriction is that you cannot move the flag stand, the ground beneath the flag stand, etc, etc. The flag stand must be reachable from the surface without digging. There will be a referee present that knows any of the more.. esoteric restrictions.

After forty-eight hours are up the bells will be rung and the game will begin. Killing your opponents is both illegal and an automatic loss for our team, maiming is frowned upon but possibly unavoidable. You will need to sign papers to that extent. Err.. is that alright with everyone?"
Bruce glances about those present. "I mean, my lord has invited one of the finest healers in the land to handle any mending needed after the match, and the referees will be capable, but the in-between sometimes gets a bit bloody."
