He was able to find, thanks to the new light in the room, what could reasonably be assumed to be a staircase up behind a door. As for Dowling the flames, he realizes something. They aren't burning anything. In fact, they look more like something pretending to be flames.

Curious, Baron held his hand out to the fire, seeing if it felt hot. If it didn't he would fish around in the drawer that it was spilling out of.

It did not in fact feel hot. Well, there was some heat, but that was likely whatever reaction created the effect. There were things that felt like paper and things he couldn't quite identify by touch. About the width of a hand, prongs sticking out oddly, metal. That was what he could tell from just groping.

Not really having the time to mess around deciphering what were probably cheap runes, Baron slipped his coat back on. He slipped the strange keys into the opposite pocket to the lock from outside and headed up into the house proper.

The staircase opened into a kitchen more modest than would be expected for this part of town.

Safe in the knowledge that nobody was home but not in the position of knowing whether they soon would be, Baron headed up through the kitchen without stopping. His eyes were still filtering for magic as he went to each room in succession scouting out possible locations for lock boxes or safes.
