Dr. Hannigan's Grand Hunting Expedition
#41
Oolla leaned forward with wide eyes staring during the display. Once the piece was completed she sat back a moment with a look of light surprise on her face. "Annabeth..." She leaned forward again and pointed a finger at the creation. "That's very pretty!" In her awe she didn't seem to notice much of anything else going on.

Dr. Hannigan was clearly also delighted by the display but she tore her attention away to look at the two newcomers Szonja and Scherza. She grinned widely at each of them in turn. "Welcome, welcome! It's quite nice to meet you all, my name is Doctor Hannigan and I'm quite charmed to make all of your acquaintances! Now a prudent question, do any of you have any experience in the collecting and storing of arachnid pheromone glands?" She looked around expectantly as if waiting for a flood of positive responses.

<span style="color:#3399ff;">"I assume it involves putting pointy things inside them and then moving it about to take something out from inside of them. Beyond that, no."</span> Annabeth said in her usual neural tone as she gave the creation to Oolla.

Oolla seemed to be completely oblivious to whatever else was going on in the encampment. She accepted the rainbow glass haltingly. "I can have this? Is that ok?" Her face was a mixture of hope and suspicion.

<span style="color:#3399ff;">"Of course. It's an image of your friend as seen by another. It has no bearing on me. I have the memory of what I made. That is enough for me. Enjoy. If you give it some time near me, it will become more solid and less likely to break. A couple minutes should suffice."</span> She smiled and set it down near enough to continue hardening. She turned back towards the person they were here to assist. Not realizing what might be thought of her gesture.

It seemed to take a moment for anyone to acknowledge her presence. There was a lot going on. A young sparkly girl was making something out of glass and it had everyone’s attention, including Szonja’s. She had never seen anything like it. Or anyone like the young woman. She seemed to have glass in her skin.

When she was done, Dr. Hannigan identified herself and asked the group a question.

Szonja simply shook her head in answer. She had been lead to large spider holes by the scent of rotting animal corpses in the past but had never killed or harvested anything from them.

”I’ve never hunted or killed spiders but I could probably find their nests fairly reliably by scent. I could also locate dead spiders but I suppose we need live ones.”

"I'd guess the glands would be near the posterior, to help coat webbing... but that's just a guess. No practical experience, I'm afraid." Jacob offered, suspecting their host was about to be a bit disappointed.

Scherza tilted her head, not sure what the person meant by harvesting spiders. How did one even do that? Her eyes widened a bit in curiosity as she spoke up hesitantly. <b>"I . . . have never done such a thing, I am afraid. I know of spiders, however, there are many different kinds in the forest, is it a particular kind we are after?"</b> The elf inquired curiously, not at all necessarily pleased at the thought of trying to collect something from creepy-crawlies, not that they scared her, but it just sounded strange. What had she gotten herself into?

Oolla sat holding the hardened rainbow crystal and while she was clearly excited at first; her mood took a steep dive and she sat staring dejectedly at the magical creation.

Dr. Hannigan smiled widely, clearly she was enjoying the speculation. When Jacob spoke up she pointed at him with one hand and raised a finger from the other hand to her nose. "Aha! Quite the deduction! Yes the glands are in fact located in the abdomen towards the rear. This means that as long as the final third of the body survives then we can harvest the pheromone glands! Removing the glands should be a simple matter depending on the size of the arachnid but I'll demonstrate when the time comes." She seemed quite pleased with herself and was clearly enjoying the conversation. Her attention quickly snapped to Scherza. "You're not wrong to be afraid for we're after a very possibly dangerous species indeed, the enigmatic Razorwire Mountain Spider! Or... At least that's what I've been calling them so far. To be honest we don't know much about them." The last bit she said with a dash of bashful.

"So this isn't just a harvest, its research! said Jacob, obviously excited.
